SBV Excelsior is a football club that was created by a group of friends in 1902 and it quickly became one of the first working class teams in Netherlands.
The first time Excelsior was promoted to the top flight was in 1945. Throughout its history the team celebrated victories in the Eerste Divisie three times (1974, 1079, 2006), yet mostly the side struggled in lower leagues. The furthest the club progressed in the Dutch Cup competition was the 1930 final, where they lost to Feyenoord 0-1.
In 1979 the team has become a satellite club to Feyenoord, receiving financial help and getting players from one of the top clubs in the country. The deal between the sides was resigned in 2009, though most Excelsior supporters have always been against this partnership.
The home stadium of Excelsior is one of the smallest ones in the country - Stadion Woudestein that seats only 3,531 supporters.
From 2012 to 2014 the club competed in the second tier of the Dutch championship, Eerste Divisie. In 2014 they were promoted to the top flight.
Excelsior was the first Dutch club that introduced shirt advertising.
