History and achievements
Fiorentina is a football club from Tuscany founded in 1926 by local nobleman Luigi Ridolfi. The team played in top division for the first time in 1931; ten years later Viola claimed its first title winning Coppa Italia. The first Scudetto title came in 1956 and five years later international success followed as the team tasted the Cup Winner’s Cup honors. The second Scudetto title came in the season 1968/1969.
In the 1970s and 1980s Fiorentina stayed in mid-position, threatening the top clubs every now and then but not coming close to the title.
The next rise happened in 1995 as Fiorentina captured the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana. Even though in the 1990s and 2000s Fiorentina was quite a strong side and was contending the title, in 2001 the team was declared to be bankrupt. The new owner of the team from Fiorentina, Diego Della Valle, rebuilt Fiorentina in 2002 and the team started playing in the fourth tier of Italian football. The return to Serie A happened only 2 years later.
Recently the club has been finishing the season in top 5 and regularly played in European Cups. The total collection of silverware includes 2 National championship titles, 6 Italian cups, 1 Italian Super Cup, the European Cup, 1 UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup and 1 UEFA Cup.
The badge of the club features the emblem of Florence, a white lozenge and a red fleur-de-lis on a white field.
Stadio Artemio Franchi is a home arena of the club with a capacity of 47,000.
The most well-known nicknames of the club are Viola and Gigliati (Lillies).
