History and achievements
In 1897 was founded an English football club Fulham. The team is the oldest one from London that competes in the English top League. The club was formed by the worshipers at the Church of England on Star Road and received professional status in 1898. One year before that the club changed its name from Fulham Excelsior to the form we use today.
Fulham performed poorly in the 1920s and 1930s and that was influenced by financial problems of the club. From 1940s till 1980s the team balanced between Division Two and Division One without being promoted to the top flight.
In 1997 Fulham was bought by an Egyptian tycoon Mohamed Al-Fayed. Afterwards he poured money into the team helping the squad to improve its results. The club returned to the top League and finished seventh in 2009 which is their highest league position in the history. The following year the club played in the UEFA Europa League.
In the run of its history Fulham has never claimed a major trophy, but managed to reach the final matches of the 1975 FA Cup Final and 2010 Europa League. The club produced a number of great players including Johnny Haynes, Bobby Robson, George Cohen, Alan Mullery. The most popular nicknames of the team are the Cottagers and the Lilywhites.
