Gil Vicente

History and achievements

Gil Vicente Futebol Clube is a football club from Barcelos, Portugal, founded on May 3, 1924.

The idea to create a football club in Barcelos came to four friends who played football near the city theatre named after Gil Vicente, a Portuguese poet. The team played its first matches at the Campo da Estacao stadium which belonged to another football club based in the city. Since May 3, 1933 the club has played at their own stadium, Campo de Granja – the first match there was witnessed by more than five thousand spectators.

Gil Vicente was promoted to the Portuguese top league in 1990. In 1997 the club was relegated to Lega de Honra, but already in 1999 it made its way back. In the 1999/00 season the club finished fifth in the national championship (best Portuguese championship result).

Currently, Gil Vicente plays its home matches at the Estádio Municipal de Barcelos stadium with the capacity of more than twelve thousand spectators. Paulo Alves is the club’s head coach.
