Górnik is a football club in Poland, located in Zabrze. It was founded when several teams in Zabrze merged together in the period from 1945 to 1948. That new team was named Górnik which means Miner.
In 1952 the club began to compete in the Polish Second Division. The club was promoted to the top division in 1955. In their first game in the top flight Górnik beat local rivals Ruch Chorzów 3-1. The team won their first league title in 1957 and the following title came in 1959. The 1960s was a successful period for the team. They were crowned with the league titles in 1961, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966 and 1967. In 1961 they made their debut in the European Cup and in 1970 Górnik succeeded to finish second in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, losing to Manchester City in the final. In 1971 and 1972 the team was the league champion but after that they were in decline till mid-1980s. The situation gradually improved and Górnik was crowned with the league title in 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988.
Their latest participation in the UEFA Cup in 1994/95, since then they had mixed success and in the 2009/10 season faced relegation but the following season they returned to the top flight.
The team’s home ground in Zabrze is Ernest Pohl Stadium, initially it had a capacity for 10,000 and recently it’s been renovated and the amount of seats has been extended up to 32,000.
