History and achievements
Granada CF was established in spring of 1931 and was named Recreativo Granada. In 1941 they played their first game in the Primera division, in 1959 they managed to get through to the final of Copa del Rey but lost to Barcelona. Throughout its history the club spent only 17 seasons in elite Spanish division. From 1976 the club has been playing mainly in the Segunda B having spent there 22 seasons.
The team was on the brink of bankruptcy in 2009 but owing to the sponsorship contract with Udinese Granada survived. They loaned some players from the Italian club and thus managed to fight back promotion to La Liga.
The stadium of the club is called Los Cármenes. It hosts about 22,000 spectators and was introduced in 1995. Some matches of the Spain national team took place here.
Nowadays Granada struggles for its place in Primera.
The highest position they ever reached was the 6th in the Spain’s highest division. Also once they managed to get to the finals of the Copa del Rey. The club topped the Segunda several times and the Segunda B in 1983, 2000 and 2010.
Notable players and managers for the squad in different periods of its history were Ladislao Mazurkiewicz, Francisco Bru, Miguel Muňoz, Pape Diakhate, Jeno Kalmar, Alejandro Scopelli.
