Grasshopper Club Zürich (also known as GC, GCZ, or Grasshoppers) is one of the most successful Swiss football teams. Grasshopper was created in 1886 by Tom E. Griffith, an English student. The club claimed its first Swiss championship title in 1898 and dominated in the tournament in the following decade. In the 1920s the Hungarian coach Izidor Kürschner led the team to three more titles of the Swiss championship and four Swiss Cups. Overall during the first half of the 20th century the club clinched 15 titles of the league and 13 Swiss Cups.
The only time the team was relegated from the top flight was in 1949, though Grasshopper managed to bounce back quickly and since that moment has never left the first division. The side won a domestic double in 1956 and reached the quarter finals of the European cup, though three seasons after the team’s fortunes changed and Grasshopper could not clinch the title of the domestic league for 15 years.
In the 1970s and the 1980s Grasshopper recaptured its lost positions, when the club reached the semi-final of the 1977/1978 UEFA Cup and won the championship title three times in a row. Overall the club’s history boasts 27 Swiss League trophies and 18 Swiss Cups.
The home stadium of the club is Letzigrund that can sit up to 25,000. The chairman of the club is André Dosé.
