History and achievements
Club Deportivo Guadalajara (Chivas del Guadalajara or simply Guadalajara) is a football club in Mexico, founded in 1906 by Edgar Everaert. In 1908 the club’s name was changed from Club de Futbol Union to Club Deportivo Guadalajara. All in all playing in the amateur league since its foundation till 1943 the team won thirteen titles. Their first success in the Liga Mayor came in the 1956/57 season when they won their first Primera División title. The second half of 1950s and the following decade was successful for the team as they were the league winners in 1958/59, 1959/60, 1960/61, 1961/62, 1963/64, 1964/65, 1969/70. In 1963 and 1970 Guadalajara won Copa México, in 1962 they were CONCACAF Champions’ Cup winners. At that period the team won seven Campeón de Campeones titles.
In the 1970s and the beginning of 1980s Guadalajara showed poor results. Since the 1982/83 season the team competed in the playoffs every season and in 1986/87 they won the league title. In the first half of 1990s they had little success but when Ricardo Ferretti was appointed the team’s manager in 1996, he brought the team to the third place in the Invierno and led the side to the victory in the Verano 1997. In October 2002, Guadalajara was sold to Jorge Vergara.
During the Apertura 2006 campaign the team qualified to the playoffs being eighth in the league and reached the final of the Primera División where they faced Toluca. Guadalajara won their 11th title beating Toluca 3-2 on aggregate.
The team play their home matches at Estadio Omnilife, which was built in 2010. It is the 4h largest stadium in Mexico with a capacity of 49,900.
