Incheon United is a South Korean football side that represents the city of Incheon in the K League Classic.
Incheon FC was born in June 2003. In December the club adopted the name of Incheon United. The then-manager strengthened his squad with the signing of Masakiyo Maezono and Alpay Özalan. The club’s first fixture was played against Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors on April 3, 2004. The very first victory in the championship came in the match against Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma. Incheon United finished 12th in its debut season.
The club’s improved fortunes were reflected in a second-place finish in 2005. During that campaign Incheon United boasted the highest average attendance in the league. Expectations were high going into the 2006 season, but the team’s poor league form resulted in a bottom-place finish. The side managed to reach the KFA Cup semi-finals but was knocked out by Chunnam Dragons after losing a dramatic penalty shootout.
The club is nicknamed Neroazzurri due to its blue’n’black home kit.
