History and achievements
Ipswich Town is an English football club from Ipswich, Suffolk.
The team was formed in 1878, but turned professional only in 1936 when it joined the Southern League.
In the 1950s the club was rotating between Division three and Division two, yet in 1961 the team reached Division One and a season later claimed the title of the tournament, qualifying to the European Cup for the season 1962/1963. The rise of the team did not last long and in the 1960s the side was again yo-yoing between the leagues.
The next successful spell started in 1973 when Ipswich won Texaco Cup and finished fourth in the league. The year 1978 saw the club claiming major trophiy, as the club defeated Arsenal at Wembley Stadium and clinched the FA Cup. Three seasons later the Blues played brilliantly in Europe, winning the 1981 UEFA Cup, while at home front they finished as runners-up in 1981 and 1982. One of the most memorable matches of that period was a 6-0 victory over Manchester United at Portman Road.
In the late 1980s and 1990s the club mostly played in the second league, reaching the top flight in the season 2001/2002. A season later they were relegated to the Football League Championship and play in the second division since that (the longest-staying club in the league).
The owner of the club is Marcus Evans. The home stadium is Portman Road that has a capacity of 30,311.
The nicknames of the team are the Blues and the Tractor Boys.
