Kairat is a Kazakh football club from the city of Almaty. The club was established in 1954 under the name Lokomotiv.
The side is the most successful Kazakh team during the Soviet times that finished atop of the Soviet First League (second division) in 1976 and 1983 and competed in the Soviet Top Flight. The best result of the team at that period was the 7th place in the season 1985/1986, while overall Kairat played in the Soviet top League for 24 seasons.
The club became the first Soviet team to win a European Cup as they captured the 1971 European Railworks Cup defeating in the final FC Rapid Bucharest 2-1.
In the late 2000s Kairat endured financial problems and was declared bankrupt. The side was relegated to the First Division, yet managed to bounce back in 2009.
The club’s history boasts two titles of the Kazakhstan Premier League, five Kazakhstan Cups, one USSR Federation Cup and one Kazakhstan First Division title. The most notable past players are Yuri Shukanov, Yuri Semin and Oleg Dolmatov.
The home ground of the team is Central Stadium Almaty that can hold up to 23,804.
