Lierse is a football club based in the town Lier. The team was created in 1906 by Gustaaf Van Den Roye who decided to popularize the game in Belgium. The team Liersche Sportkring started playing in the lower leagues of Belgium football, but managed to reach promotion to the top flight only in 1927. The side continued successful run up to 1932 when it clinched the championship title for the first time. The club’s trophy cabinet also welcomed the league trophies in 1941 and 1942.
Despite going through a difficult period in the following two decades, Lierse was crowned the Belgium league champions the third time in the 1960s and also celebrated one Belgium Cup victory.
Throughout the 1907s and 1980s Lierse achieved moderate success in the top league. Yet it was the season 1996/1997 when Lierse stunned the nation winning the race for the league title from Anderlecht and Club Bruges. Two seasons later the club clinched its last major trophy - the 1999 Belgium Cup.
The home arena of the team is Herman Vanderpoortenstadion that sits 15,500 fans.
