History and achievements
The official date of birth of Liverpool FC is 15th of March 1892, the day when the owner of Anfield stadium John Holding did not allow ‘Everton’ to play at his arena and decided to build his own club that would take the name of the city.
Liverpool’s history is an amazing way from a second division club to a golden medals winner, and this route from rags to reaches took less than 10 years. In 1901 Liverpool won its first English championship, but the real golden era dates back to 1970-1980s when in a period of 17 years Liverpool hold the trophy 11 times, also crushing rival teams in English cup and winning this title 5 times. Unfortunately, starting from 1990 the club did not get the title even once, yet the English cup was conquered twice.
The club showed its character in the European tournaments and celebrated 5 victories in the UEFA Cup and 5 times won the Champions League. The last two European finals were especially memorable for the fans: in the UEFA Cup final Liverpool competed against Spanish team Alaves and gained an unforgettable victory 5-4, and in 2005 in the Champions league final Liverpool faced a strong Milan squad and despite loosing 0-3 after the first half, yet managed to equalize and snatch the victory in the series of penalties. The same clubs would meet in the final several years later but Milan would take revenge by 1-2. Another trophy the club won three times is Europe Supercup.
The nickname of the team is ‘The Reds’ according to home colors of the shirts of the team.
Three Liverpool players Roger Hunt, Ian Callaghan, Gerry Byrne won the World Cup with the English national team in 1966, while Frank Becton became the first Liverpool player to appear in the English national team. His transfer price at the time of joining the club was 100 pounds and he scored 37 goals in 74 matches.
