Liverpool FC is a Uruguayan club from Montevideo currently competing in the Primera División.
The club’s name derives from that of the city of Liverpool in England as numerous coal ships arrived in Montevideo from the English port. In 2005, the Uruguayan team even changed their away colors to red almost completely corresponding to those of Liverpool FC from England.
The club is considered to be a competitive force in the Uruguayan top league. They have shown a string of good performances since their foundation. But it’s a paradox, that though being a prominent team and having spent 72 seasons in the Primera División, Liverpool have never won the title. They’ve only reached the third place finish 5 times.
The team made several appearances on the continental arena. In 2009 and 2012, they took part in the Copa Sudamericana, and in 2011 Liverpool tasted the Copa Libertadores action. Their home matches are played at 10,000 seater Estadio Belvedere.
