Football club Lorient was established on April 2, 1926 and the team in its yearly days played in amateur leagues. Later the club managed to climb higher and to get into Division 3, but for decades the squad was floating between Division 4 and Division 3.
It was not until 1980s after a former player of the team Christian Gourcuff was appointed as a manager that the club started progressing, finishing atop of Division Two in 1998 and finally playing in Division 1 in the season 1998/1999 for the first time in its history. Although Lorient saw relegation at the end of the season, it managed to bounce back to the top flight in 2001. Just before the start of the following season Gourcuff left the club and the Argentine coach Angel Marcos took over the managerial position.
In 2002 Lorient stunned many by reaching the final of the Coupe de la Ligue yet losing in the ultimate match to Bordeaux. The club claimed its first honor two months later clinching the Coupe de France. In spite of the fact that the team was classed down the same season, in 2006 Lorient fought their way back to the Ligue 1 where it has been competing ever since.
The nickname of the club is the Hake (Les Merlus in French). The home stadium is Stade du Moustoir that has a capacity of 18,500 spectators.
