History and achievements
Club Sport Marítimo (also known as Marítimo) is a Portuguese football club playing in Primeira Liga. It was founded in 1910 in Funchal, Madeira. Despite the fact the club is based on an island, rather far off the mainland, the team performs very confidently in the Portuguese national championship with regular finishes in the middle of the table and higher.
Marítimo В – division of CS Marítimo – is a successful participant of the Portuguese second-tier football league. The club helps many players become stars at the leading European teams (and used to do so previously): Pepe from Real Madrid, Danny from Zenit and a former Everton star – Nuno Valente. Marítimo has played in the top division of the Portuguese national championship since the time of its foundation. However, they only won the competition once in their history, in 1926.
In 2011 International Federation of Football History and Statistics gave Marítimo fifth place in the ranking of Portuguese best clubs of the century. The status testifies to the fact Marítimo is Madeira’s best sports club of the 21st century.
Estádio dos Barreiros is the club’s home stadium: in spite of its moderate capacity it is a genuinely beautiful arena which is used instead of the old Campo do Almirante Reis. Funchal municipality used to question Marítimo’s land ownership rights several times. Carlos Pereira, president of the club, took all measures so that the club should not have any outside troubles. Also thanks to that, currently, the club is a confident opponent at the Portuguese top league with regular finishes in the middle of the tournament table.
