Middlesbrough is a football club that was formed in 1876 and obtained professional status in 1899. The first time Middlesbrough reached the top flight was in 1902. During its history the club mostly played in top two divisions.
The highest finish of the team in the first division was in the season 1913/1914 when the Boro came third. Before the Second World War the side also managed to finish fourth, yet in the second half of the 20th century they has never been close to contending the title.
The first silverware in the team’s trophy cabinet appeared in the season 1975/1976, when the team clinched Anglo-Scottish Cup winning in the final Fulham. In 2004 the club clinched the League Cup. Two seasons later Middlesbrough was close to grabbing one more title, but in the final of the UEFA Cup they lost to Sevilla.
The home ground of the team is Riverside Stadium that can hold up to 34,988. Sunderland and Newcastle United are two major rivals.
