Club Atlético Monarcas Morelia is a football club in Mexico, nicknamed La Monarquia or Los Canarios. It was established on 24 November 1924 in Morelia, Michoacán, and was named Oro Morelia. The team was one of those who founded the Segunda División and stayed there till the end of the 1956/57 season when they won promotion to the Primera División. Monarcas Morelia played in the top flight till they faced relegation in 1968. The team won promotion to the top flight in 1981. That was Diego Malta who guided the team at that time and helped them to win the Segunda División.
Monarcas Morelia was bought by TV Azteca in 1996. Their first league title was the Invierno, which they won in 2000, beating Toluca on penalties. The team finished the Apertura 2002 runners-up losing to Toluca. In the Clausura 2003 they were second, being defeated by Monterrey and in final of the Clausura 2011 they lost to Pumas.
Among their achievements are the Superliga title, which they won in 2010, and the second place in the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup tournament in 2002 and 2003.
Monarcas Morelia’s home venue is Estadio Morelos located in Morelia, Michoacán. Its capacity is for 41,500 spectators.
