FC Mordovia Saransk was founded in 1961.
The club used to have different names: Stroitel, Spartak, Elektrosvet, Svetotekhnika, Lisma-Mordovia and finally FC Mordovia. In the 2005 season the team finished only in the seventh place of the second division with 51 points. In the 2006 season Mordovia finished 2nd and got promoted to the first division. In 2007 Mordovia finished in the 19th place with 53 points and was relegated to the second division.
In 2009 the team managed to win the PFL Cup. In 2011/2012 the club won promotion to the top flight by finishing first in the FNL tournament. However, Mordovia did not manage to compete with Russian top sides and returned to the second best league the following year. In 2014 they returned to the top flight.
