MTK Budapest FC is a Hungarian football side that represents the city of Budapest in the Nemzeti Bajnokság. The club’s total comprises 23 league titles, 12 Hungarian Cups and 2 Hungarian Super Cups.
Formed far back as 1888, MTK is one of the most revered sides in Hungary. In 1903 the Blues became the members of the first division and were on their way to over a century of action. The first league title was obtained in 1904. From 1917 to 1925 MTK won 9 consecutive national championships.
The 1950s were decorated with three league triumphs and participation in the 1955/1956 European Cup campaign. MTK became the first Hungarian side to take part in European competitions. In the 1963/1964 season the team progressed to the European Cup Winners’ Cup final only to fall on Sporting C.P. At the outset of the new millennium MTK claimed the OTP Bank Liga title on two occasions: in 2003 and 2008. In the 2003/2004 season the club reached the third round of the Champions League but was thrashed by Celtic F.C. In 2011 MTK finished the league in the 15th place. As a result, the side tumbled into NBII but made a quick return to the elite division the following season. In 2012 MTK progressed to the Hungarian Cup final only to lose on penalties to Debrecen.
The club’s traditional colours are blue and white. Hidegkuti Nándor Stadium hosts MTK’s home matches.
