Neftchi Baku

Neftchi Baku is an Azerbaijani football team from Baku currently competing in the Azerbaijani Premier League.

Neftchi embarked on their way in 1937 as Neftyanik when they were a part of the Soviet football league system. They spent 28 seasons in the Soviet Top League and made a breakthrough in 1966 when the club reached the third position in the top flight becoming the first Azerbaijani side to accomplish such a feat in the Soviet era.

The 1990s saw the most fruitful period for Neftchi. First of all, after the split of the Soviet Union the Azerbaijan Premier League was established and Neftchi became the first team to win its title in the inaugural 1992 season. They claimed another two titles and three Azerbaijan Cups throughout the decade. In the 2000s, the team welcomed four champion titles and one Azerbaijan Cup to their trophy cabinet. Neftchi hold the record of being the most honored team in Azerbaijan with 7 titles in their tally. In 2006, the team collected the CIS Cup. Neftchi met with much success on the European stage. They featured in various UEFA competitions and were the first to climb up to the group stage of a European championship.

Neftchi play their home matches at Azerbaijani largest stadium Tofiq Bahramov Stadium which can host up to 31,200 spectators.
