The story of Nice dates back to 1904 when a club under a name of Gymnaste Club de Nice was formed with a focus mainly on athletics and gymnastics. In 1924 the club was reformed as Olympique Gymnaste Club de Nice developing football and other kinds of sport. Nice was one of the clubs that established the French league although at the beginning the team was balancing between the first and second divisions.
Nice celebrated its first title in 1951 winning the French league. One season later Nice dominated in the domestic arena again making the double with the league and Coupe de France. During the 1950s the team continued collecting titles as the club’s trophy cabinet welcomed Coupe de France in 1954 and three trophies of the top tier of the French football.
In the following three decades Nice endured gradual decline that was brightened only by the Coupe de France in 1997. What is more at the beginning of the 21st century Nice faced financial problems and failed to meet the fiscal requirements of the League, consequently it was relegated to Division Three. It took the team five years to stabilize and come back to the Ligue 1. The season 2011/2012 saw the team securing a place in the top division finishing 13th with 42 points.
Nice hosts its home games at the Stade Municipal du Ray, but a new stadium is scheduled to be opened in 2013.
