Notts County is an English football club from the city of Nottingham. The club’s foundation dates back to 1862 – the side is the oldest professional football club in the world.
The club is a founding member of the Football League in 1888. During the early days of the tournament Notts County finished third in the season 1890/1891 and reached the final of the FA Cup where they were defeated by Blackburn Rovers 3-1. Yet two seasons later the team progressed to the final of the national cup again and clinched the trophy overcoming Bolton Wanderers 4–1.
Notts County played in the top flight till 1926 when they were classed down to the first division. The club drew impressive crowds of 35,000 after the World War II as they were fighting for a promotion to the top division, but the team did not manage to earn a return ticket and during the 1960s was hit by the financial difficulties.
It was not until Jimmy Sirrel was appointed as the head coach in 1969 that the side stabilized. Under the help of the talented Scot tactician they climbed back to the top league, staying in the tournament for three seasons and even reaching the FA Cup quarter-final.
The club captured the Anglo-Italian Cup at Wembley in March 1995, yet throughout the 1990s and 2000s they were floating up and down League One and League Two.
The nickname is the Magpies.
The club hosts its home games at the Meadow Lane that can hold up to 20,229 supporters.
