The football club Palermo is a team representing Sicily in Serie A. It was founded in 1900.
According to one of the numerous stories that pervade the history of the club, on December 30 the first game of the Sicilian team took place, which they lost 0-5 to an English side. However, their first official game ended in a 3-2 victory over another local club Messina.
In 1907 Palermo changed their initial red and blue team colors to the pink and black we are now accustomed to.
In 1930 the ‘rosaneri’ fought their way to the Italian Serie B, and in 2 years even got promoted to the top league. In recognition of this success the club’s functionaries presented to the team the brand new ‘Stadio del Littorio’, which is now known under the name ‘Stadio Renzo Barbera’ and which remains the team’s home arena till today.
In mid-40s Palermo was relegated from Serie A and faced difficult times. Floating up and down between the first and the second division, Palermo was trying hard to find its way.
A new turn in the history is linked to the coming of Renzo Barbera in 1970. During the decade of his presidency, the club got the first sponsor ever (the NR company).
The 80s were marked with ‘suspicious’ games and consequent investigations of the police.
The modern successes of the team are connected to the coming of the lucky duo of president Maurizio Zamparini and coach Francesco Guidolin. It was their Palermo that the whole Italy was talking about, and it was due to them that the team’s finishing in the top 10 of the league ceased to be sensational.
However, the downfall in the team’s performance caused their relegation to Serie B at the end of 2012/2013 season. One season later Palermo returned to Serie A.
