History and achievements
Paris Saint-Germain is a French club based in the capital of France that was formed in 1970 after Paris FC and Stade Saint-Germain merged in one team. The home ground of the club is Parc des Princes that has a capacity of 48,700 seats. The badge of the club features the stylized image of the Eiffel Tower, the white cradle of Louis XIV both depicted on blue background. The official anthem of the club was introduced in 2010 and is called ‘Go West’.
It did not take much time for the club to claim its first title as in 1982 and in 1983 PSG was crowned as French Cup champions, and it was three years later the team finished atop of the League and was honored the champions of France. The 1990s saw the team’s golden age as Canal+ that became the owner of the club and invested money in the club’s growth and development. The team enjoyed international success winning the final of the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1996, collecting a League title, two League Cups and three French cups.
The 2000s turned out to be a huge decline for the club as it stayed in the mid position and even finished 16th once, though managing to capture one League Cup.
Recently the club regained its lost positions taking the French Cup in 2010, but it was the summer of 2011 that changed the history of the club as the Qatar Investment Authority became the major shareholder of the team and announced plans to clinch the UEFA Champions League. PSG signed a number of talented players like Thiago Motta, Maxwell, Jérémy Ménez and Diego Lugano building the squad that would win the title.
The fiercest rival of the team is Olympique de Marseille, the matches between these teams are called ‘Le Classique’ and are famous for hot atmosphere.
The current manager of the club is Carlo Ancelotti and the director of football is Leonardo.
Paris Saint-Germain is famous for its youth academy and the prominent players that graduated from it are Nicolas Anelka, Luis Fernández, Jean-Marc Pilorget and Jérôme Leroy.
