History and achievements
Rayo Vallecano is a football club from Madrid currently playing in the Primera. The club was established in 1924. Their home ground is called ‘Estadio de Vallecas’ that seats 15,000 people. The team is rather unstable constantly balancing between the Primera and the Segunda once having been relegated to the Segunda B.
In 1999 the club got back to the highest division which marked their resurrection. In 2001 the team reached the Copa del Rey quarterfinals to be beaten by future finalist Alaves. Straight after that success Rayo crashes to the Segunda with the story to continue with it being relegated even further to the Segunda B.
In 2005 the club hired a new manager Michel who had played for Real Madrid in the 1980s. In 2007 the team got the second position in the Segunda B and was eligible to play qualifiers but lost to Eibar. The next season the problem of promotion to the Segunda was solved. Then they got the 5th place in the Segunda. The same year the ladies’ squad of Rayo Vallecano won the national championship and qualified for the Champions League. Currently the men’s squad performance leaves much to be desired and they are under relegation threat.
In 1985 and 2008 Rayo Vallecano topped the Segunda B.
Fernando Marquez, Lucas Perez Martinez, Abel Resino, Coque, Feliciano Rivilla, Tony Polster, Ismael Ursais, Ivan Tal, Juan Carlos Lorenzo, Hugo Sanchez, Dmitry Radchenko, Dave van den Berg, Victor Onopko, Alvaro Gutierrez, Fernando Morena, Jorge Valdivia are among the notable players of the club.
