History and achievements
Crvena Zvezda Beograd is a capital side Serbian club, which is more known as Red Star Belgrade. The club’s home ground is Red Star Stadium with approximately 55,000 seats.
Yugoslav Youth Physical Culture Society founded Crvena Zvezda on 4 March 1945. The club’s first games were friendlies, but ‘The Red & Whites’ soon managed to get a place in the national competition. The team lifted the Yugoslav Cup three times by the 1950s and won the Yugoslav First League in 1951, but gained the world recognition after progressing to the 1956/1957 European Cup quarterfinals.
However, the club continued their chase for trophies and became the runner-up of the 1979 UEFA Cup, losing to Borussia Mönchengladbach in the finals. In the 1990/1991, Red Star lifted their first international trophy, the European Cup, after beating French side Marseille in a penalty shoot-out. The same year, the club won the Intercontinental Cup.
