History and achievements
Club Atlético River Plate is an Argentinean football club located in the Belgrano neighborhood of Buenos Aires. It is the most successful side in Argentina. The club set a national record by winning the Primera División on 34 occasions. The titles obtained by River Plate also include two Copa Libertadores, one Intercontinental Cup and one Supercopa Sudamericana.
River Plate was born out of the amalgamation of Santa Rosa and La Rosales in 1901. The club was called Club Atlético River Plate with reference to the Río de la Plata. During the amateur era River won only one championship. After the establishment of the Primera División in 1931, the club immediately elevated to the highest echelons of the game. Its first professional title arrived in 1932 when River thrashed Independiente in the play-off matches. Los Millonarios went on to secure another two league titles in 1936 and 1937.
The 1940s and the 1950s belonged to River Plate. The club possessed an excellent eleven full of such legendary players as Juan Carlos Muñoz, Félix Loustau and Ángel Labruna. However, the next two decades were titleless. After a 17-year-wait, River was back at the top of Argentinean football as the team clinched the Primera División in 1975. In 1986 the club claimed its first Copa Libertadores triumph.
The year of 2011 was blemished by inconsistency and a shocking bottom-place finish. The drop to the Primera B was suffered in that time. Following that relegation, the club`s fans staged mass riots. But with the purchase of Fernando Cavenaghi and David Trezeguet, River earned promotion to the Primera División the following year.
