History and achievements
The football club from the city of Saint-Étienne was established in 1919 but it was only in 1933 that the team received the name we use today. The nickname of the club is the Greens. The home ground is the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard that can hold up to 35,600 supporters.
Before World War Two Saint-Etienne mostly stayed in Division Two, but in the 1950s surprised many coming to Division One and finishing in 1951 as a runner-up behind Lille. Five years later the club claimed its first major trophy the Coupe Charles Drago. In 1957 Saint-Etienne was crowned as the League champion for the first time in its history, a year later the Coupe Drago was taken by the club again.
In 1962 Saint Etienne clashed with Nancy in the Coupe de France final and won the match 1-0. The glorious spell started as Jean Snella was appointed the head coach of the team. The years 1968, 1970, 1974 and 1975 gave the team true glory as Saint-Etienne made doubles winning the league title and the Coupe de France this way becoming one of the most titled French clubs. Overall the history of the team boasts 10 champions titles, 6 French Cups and 5 Tropee des champions. In 1976 the team fought its way to the final of the European Cup but was defeated there by Bayern Munich 1-0.
In the early 1980s Saint-Etienne endured financial problems and did not threaten to hit the same results, later even being relegated to Division Two. Although Saint-Etienne managed to bounce back in 2005, lately the team retained the mid-table position. The most notable players that were a part of the team include Loïc Perrin, Michel Platini, Salif Keïta and Christian Synaeghel.
