Siena football club appeared in 1904 though at that time it was called Società Studio e Divertimento (i.e. Society for Study and Entertainment). Football department was opened four years later and was called Società Sportiva Robur. These days Robur (‘Strength’) as well as Bianconeri (‘White-black’) are two main nicknames of the club.
In the season 1933/1934 the team was reformed as Associazione Calcio Siena and a year later competed in Seria B for the first time. It was the first after war year when the club participated in Serie A, yet it was relegated after the first season. The following promotion to the top flight of the Italian football took place only 58 years later as Siena under the management of Papadopulo finished atop of Serie B.
The 13th place after the season 2003/2004 was a surprising result they showed. The following three seasons Siena was struggling to secure a place in the top league, reaching the 14th place in 2005 and the 17th place in 2007. The season 2011/2012 saw Siena finishing 14th in the table. In the season 2012/2013 they did not manage to stay afloat in the top league and returned to Serie B.
The traditional colors of the club are black and white, they refer to the coat of arms of the city of Siena.
The club hosts its home games at the Stadio Artemio Franchi with a capacity of 15,000, yet the chairman of Siena announced that the team will construct a new arena for 20,000 supporters in the future.
