AC Sparta Prague is a Czech football club, located in Prague. It was founded in 1893 by three brothers Václav, Bohumil and Rudolf Rudl and the newly created club was named the Athletic Club Sparta.
The team had a prolific period in 1920-1930s and after that the team was nicknamed Iron Sparta. They won many league titles and became Central European Cup holder in 1927, 1935 and 1964.
Czechoslovakia was runner-up at the 1962 FIFA World Cup and there were such eminent players from Sparta in the squad as Kvašňák, Jiří Tichý and Václav Mašek, who helped the national team to succeed.
In 1975 the team relegated to the second division for the first time in their history, nevertheless returned to the top flight the following season. In the 1983/84 season the team reached the quarterfinal of the UEFA Cup. Sparta has regularly competed in the UEFA Champions League since 1997.
Since the country gained independence Sparta Prague hardly missed a season without gaining the Gambrinus liga title until 2009/10. In 1996, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008 the team was crowned with the Czech Football Cup titles, in 2010 they won Czech Republic Football Supercup.
The team’s home ground in Prague is Generali Arena, which has a capacity of 20,854 spectators.
