History and achievements
FC Spartak Moscow is arguably the most popular team in Russia. The team won 12 USSR championships and 9 Russian championships. Spartak is a three-time Russian Cup and six-time Commonwealth of Independent States Cup winner. The team used to make it to the semifinals of all major European competitions (UEFA Cup, UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and European Cup). For a long time Spartak has been referred to as the ‘people’s team’.
Spartak played in the USSR championship from its very beginning, i.e. since 1936. They only finished third in the first championship but already next season the ‘red-and-whites’ became national champions. Spartak had a life-time rival – Dinamo – starting from the Soviet times. Now this derby is in gear again as both teams usually struggle for medals.
Spartak Moscow has always been a red-and-white team. Emblem of the Spartak sports community was introduced in 1935 by Nikolai Starostin who framed a red diamond with white and wrote a ‘C’ letter in the middle with the background of a diagonal white stripe (which initially was drawn in reverse and altered in 1949).
In the 90s the club emblem was altered again: a ball was placed into the ‘C’ letter design of which was changed as well. Last alterations were added in 2003 when the diamond was adorned with a golden star over it – a symbol of five championship victories. No doubt, the emblem will see new changes as Spartak is just one national title away from the second star.
Spartak never owned a stadium – the club played its home matches on rented pitches. The team played the majority of games at the ‘Lokomotiv’ and, of course, ‘Luzhniki’ stadiums. It is all due to the fact Spartak has never belonged to any governmental body while in free market conditions the club has had no time to build quickly and securing a piece of land for a sports complex in Moscow is not that easy. The construction of a new stadium is already in process: it will be built in Tushino, approximate capacity is 40 thousand people. It is due till 2016.
