FC Twente is a football club from the city of Enschede, Netherlands. The team was established in 1965 and from the early days the team climbed the football pyramid, finishing third in 1969 in the top flight. During the 1970s the club regularly finished in top 3 (1969, 1972 and 1973). Twente was a step away from the championship title in 1974, yet lost the race to Feyenoord in the very last match of the season.
The following season turned to be sensational on the European arena. Tweente defeated many strong clubs, reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup, where Juventus from Turin could not stop the small club. In the ultimate match Twente was competing against Borussia Mönchengladbach, but did not manage to outplay the German side and lost on aggregate (0–0, 1–5).
In the 1970s the club’s trophy cabinet welcomed its first major silverware as Twente advanced to the final of the KNVB Cup and defeated PEC Zwolle 3–0 there.
In the 1980s the side stepped on a downward spiral even facing dropping in a class. Twente bounced back quickly and soon managed to recapture its lost positions. In 2001 the team won the second KNVB Cup overcoming in the final PSV. Despite serious financial difficulties in the early 2000s, Twente established itself as a real power in Eredivisie. As Steeve Mcclaren was appointed a head coach, Twente clinched Eredivisie title and celebrated victory in the Dutch Cup, losing throughout the season just two matches.
One of the recent achievements is KNVB Cup that was taken in the season 2010/2011.
The home stadium of the team is De Grolsch Veste that was opened in 1998. The arena sits up to 30,000.
