History and achievements
FC Union Berlin is a German club founded in 1906 in Berlin. Contrary to other local sides of the time, Union Berlin consisted only of working-class players. That’s why they’ve got a nickname ‘Schlosserjungs’, or metalworker-boys in English. Later on, the moniker changed into the Iron Ones or the Iron Union and is applied to the club till today.
At their early years, the team regularly took the title in local championships. They announced themselves on the national level finishing runners-up in the 1923 German championship. In the post-war period, the Iron Union enjoyed moderate success constantly rotating between German lower leagues. The fact that East German government assisted to 'elite' clubs at the expense of 'civilian' clubs like Union Berlin added to Union’s difficulties. However, the club enjoyed a tremendous surge in popularity after winning the East German Cup in 1968.
After reunification of Germany in 1990, Union Berlin found themselves mired in the third tier. They’ve never made their run into the top flight since that time and the farthest they progressed to was the 6th place in the 2. Bundesliga in the 2001/02 season which earned them a ticket to the UEFA Cup qualification. Since 2009, the club got a toehold in the second division and competes there today.
FC Union Berlin play their home matches at Stadion An der Alten Försterei which can hold 18,432 spectators.
