History and achievements
Vitória Sport Clube is a Portuguese football club. Sometimes the club is called after the city where it was founded – Guimarães – in 1922. Vitória de Guimarães is the name supporters like to use despite its length. This name is also used as some people confuse it with Vitória de Setúbal.
Despite the fact the club has not won either Portuguese Cup or championship so far, it is thought to be a very prestigious and rather a strong one. The club has played in the top Portuguese league since 1941 and was only relegated in 2006 after finishing at the end of the table. The club is a frequent participant of qualification rounds in various European competitions.
In January 2004 a tragedy occurred during the match between Vitória de Guimarães and Benfica: midway through the game Miklos Feher, a Benfica player, fell on the pitch and never got up – he died of a heart failure. Just a couple of minutes before the tragedy he was booked, which made him smile at the referee, and then collapsed several meters away.
After the club was relegated from the national top league, no one had faith in the team. However, the club’s head coach was not upset and took extraordinary measures to make the team perform well again. During the season the club was not constantly successful in the national second-tier league, so in the winter break Manuel Cajuda was appointed head coach to strengthen the team’s fighting spirit. The club finished second that year and got promoted to the top Portuguese league.
