History and achievements
West Bromwich Albion is a football club established in 1878. The nickname of the club is the Baggies and it refers to the uniform of workers that have always been supporting the club. The team is also called ‘The Throttles’ as this bird is depicted at the club’s badge. The home ground of the team since 1900 has been The Hawthorns stadium that sits more than 26,000.
The club received professional status in 1885, a year later the team reached the FA Cup but lost 2-0 to Blackburn Rovers. In 1888 the team outclassed Preston North in the final of the FA Cup and claimed its first major trophy. The only time West Bromwich Albion finshed atop of the Football League was in the 1919/1920 season.
In the 1950s West Bromwich created one of the most powerful teams in the history that showed exciting and attacking football. The club took the FA Cup in 1955 and reached semifinal of that tournament in 1957. In the 1960s the team was one of the most strongest cup sides in England succeeding in the League Cup in 1966 and the FA Cup in 1968.
After the Premier League was formed in 1992 West Bromwich found themselves in Division Three and it took the club 10 years to come back to the top league. From 2003 to 2011 West Bromwich was floating between the Championship and the Premier League not being able to secure its position in the mid-table of the top English league. Last season the Throttles finished the 15th gaining 22 points in total.
