Alejandro Sabella started his playing career in 1974 in River Plate and played a crucial role in the 1977 Metropolitano championship when the team became the winner.
In 1978 Sheffield United signed Sabella and he spent two seasons there after which he joined Leeds United.
Sabella played for Estudiantes de La Plata from 1982 till 1987 with a short spell with Brazilian Gremio. The period with Estudiantes was successful as the team won the 1982 Metropolitano and 1983 Nacional tournament.
After two years in Ferro Carril Oeste and Irapuato, Alejandro Sabella finished his career of a player.
Sabella started his managerial career, working as Daniel Passarella’s assistant. They guided Italian Parma AC, the Uruguay national team, Brazilian Corinthians, Mexican Monterrey and River Plate.
During the period from 2009 till 2011 Alejandro Sabella headed Estudiantes de La Plata. And under his rule the team won the 2009 Copa Libertadores.
In 2011 he was appointed as the head coach of the Argentina national football team and took them to the final of 2014 World Cupo in Brazil, where Argentina lost to Germany 0-1. Shortly after that Sabella left the squad.
