Luís André de Pina Cabral e Villas-Boas was born on 17 October 1977 in Porto, Portugal.
André had no experience as a professional footballer. When he was a child, he went in for football at amateur level. André played for Ribeirense, Ramaldense as a goalkeeper. In Clube Marechal Gomes da Costa he changed his position to a midfielder.
Bobby Robson, the manager of Porto in 1994/1996, played the crucial role in André’s formation as a coach. It was he who sent André to Scotland, so that the young manager could obtain the coaching qualification. At the age of 17, Villas-Boas obtained his C coaching licence and at the age of 18 he got B licence. Villas-Boas obtained A licence when he was 19.
After his return to Portugal, the young manager started to coach the Porto under-19 team.
At the beginning of 2009/2010, André began his career as a club manager, being appointed the head coach of Académica de Coimbra on 14 October 2009.
On 2 June, André signed a contract with Porto. The beginning of the 2010/2011 season was successful and on 20 December 2010, the contract was extended to 2013.
On 21 June 2011, André resigned. After that, on 22 June, Villas-Boas became Chelsea F.C. manager. The contract with the young coach was signed for three years, but his being at the helm didn’t last long. On 4 March 2012, André was dismissed from his position. On 3 July 2012, it became known that Villas-Boas was put in charge of Tottenham Hotspur.
In the summer 2013 Villas-Boas was allowed to spend a huge sum of money on transfers and brought in some influential players. However, Tottenham were struggling to catch up with the leaders and after two painful defeats from Manchester City (0-6) and Liverpool (0-5) in December Andre Villas-Boas was dismissed. After a couple of months away from the game, the Portuguese replaced Luciano Spalletti at the helm of a Russian club Zenit St.Petersburg in March 2014.
