Domenico Di Carlo started playing as a defensive midfielder in the local team Real Cassino in Serie C2. His playing career included a number of small teams such as Treviso, Ternana, Como and Palermo, yet it was the move to Vicenza that propelled him to new heights, as the team climbed from Serie C1 to Serie A and even clinched one Coppa Italia. Vicenza also played in the semifinals of the Cup Winners’ Cup, Di Carlo stayed there for 9 seasons.
The Italian started coaching in Vicenza youth team, going to Mantova later and gaining the team promotion from Serie C2 to Serie B. The manager trained Parma for half a year, yet did not manage to impress the side's owners and switched to Chievo that he led to two middle table finishes. Despite leaving the team for Sampdoria for a short period, Di Carlo subsequently returned to Chievo and signed a contract with the team for the season 2012/2013. He was released in October 2012. In 2014 Di Carlo had a brief spell with Livorno.
