Felix Magath (father – a Puerto Rican, mother – a German) was born on July 26, 1953 in Aschaffenburg, Bayern, Germany.
Felix spent his youth career with VfR Nilkheim and TV 60 Aschaffenburg as a box-to-box midfielder. Magath began his senior career in Viktoria Aschaffenburg (1972-1974), later he played for FC Saarbrücken (1974-1976) and he spent the majority of time with Hamburger SV (1976-1986) and finished his playing career there. When in Hamburger SV, Magath won the German championship trice (1979, 1982, 1983), the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup (1977), the UEFA European Football Championship (1980) and the European Cup (1983). Felix played for the West Germany national team in 1977-1986 (43 matches, 3 goals). In 1982 and 1986, West Germany national team won silver medals of the FIFA World Cups. It was after the FIFA World Cup 1986 that Magath decided to finish his career.
After finishing his career, Magath worked as manager and assistant coach in different clubs. Felix was in charge of Hamburger SV in 1995. In 1997, he worked with 1. FC Nuremberg and coached it to Bundesliga. A year later he worked with Werder Bremen and did not allow relegation from Bundesliga. In 1999-2001, Felix coached Eintracht Frankfurt. In 2001, Magath was appointed VfB Stuttgart head coach and helped the team to a place in the UEFA Champions League. In 2004, the coach was in charge of Bayern Munich and helped them win the German championship and Cup. In 2007, Magath became VfL Wolfsburg director of sport and coach; later in 2009-2011 he was in charge of Schalke 04 and afterwards returned to VfL Wolfsburg.
In February 2014 Magath was appointed a new Fulham manager in an attempt to save the club from relegation.
Felix Magath became Coach of the year in Germany thrice (2003, 2005 and 2009) despite the fact that many people dislike him for his severity and stubbornness. No wonder his nicknames are ‘Qualix’ and ‘Saddam’.
