Fernando Manuel Fernandes da Costa Santos is a former Portuguese player, who currently coaches the Greek national football team.
He started his youth career in Sport Lisboa e Benfica in 1966, and then played in Marítimo and Estoril Praia. He retired in 1975 at the age of 21.
In 1987 he started coaching his former club Estoril Praia and worked there till 1994. Then he moved to Estrela da Amadora and in 1998 he headed FC Porto.
Under his guidance FC Porto won 1998/99 Portuguese Liga, two Portuguese Cups and two Portuguese SuperCups and, having won this tithes, the team reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-final.
In 2001 Fernando Santos moved to Greece where he coached AEK Athens and then Panathinaikos. In 2003/04 he had a spell in Sporting Clube de Portugal after what he came back to Greece to head AEK Athens. In 2006/07 season he headed Benfica in Portugal.
Since 2007 he has stayed in Greece, having guided PAOK, and in 2010 the Hellenic Football Federation appointed Santos the head coach of the national team.
