Francis Gillot is a former French footballer. Currently, he is FC Girondins de Bordeaux head coach. He was born on February 9, 1960 in Maubeuge, France.
Francis began his coaching career in the Sochaux youth team. Afterwards, he assisted Joel Muller in coaching RC Lens and after Muller quit, he led the club himself. Here, Francis won supporters’ trust thanks to decisiveness, sincerity and faith in young players; however, lack of experience let him down. Thus, in 2006, his club was on the top of the table half of the season but eventually finished fifth which deprived them of a place in the UEFA Champions League qualification round.
On May 28, 2007 he resigned. On January 2, 2008 the coach appeared at the helm of another French club – Sochaux. There, Gillot had a team undergoing difficulties – Sochaux was on the verge of relegation to a lower division. However, he managed the situation and even got a contract extension till 2012. Nevertheless, soon Francis announced he would lead Bordeaux. The beginning of the season was difficult – 13 points in fourteen matches, but at the end of the season the club finished fifth. In addition, Gillot’s team had six victories in last six matches of the season.
