Greg Abbott is a former football player turned manager. He was born on 14 December 1963 in Coventry. He started his playing career in the local team Coventry City, where he became an apprentice in 1980. Abbott went through the ranks of the junior sides and penned a professional contract with the club in January 1982, yet did not make a single appearance for the side till the end of the season. In the summer of 1982 he joined Bradford City where he made his debut in the game against Plymouth Argyle. During his nine-year spell at the club he featured in 281 matches and netted 38 goals.
In 1992 Abbott signed a deal with Halifax Town where he stayed for a season making 28 appearances and netting one goal. In 1992 he joined Hull City where he stayed for four seasons and played in 124 matches.
After retiring form professional career in 1996 he switched to coaching, joining the Leeds United coaching team and working with the youth teams. In July 2006 he was appointed as Carlisle United assistant manager. Consequently he was selected as caretaker manager and was appointed the club’s permanent manager on 5 December on an 18-month contract. After six years with Carlisle, Abbott switched for coaching job at Notts County.
