Gustavo Augusto Poyet Domínguez is a Uruguayan football manager. He was born in 1967 in Montevideo, Uruguay, and played for Grenoble and River Plate in his country. In 1990, he moved to Spain, where he joined Real Zaragoza. For that team Poyet played until 1997, made 240 appearances and scored 60 goals.
The following club he played for was Chelsea. During his spell they won UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and European Super Cup in 1998, in 2000 they won FA Cup. All in all he featured in 145 matches and scored 49 goals for Chelsea. In May 2001, Gus Poyet moved to Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of £2.2m and scored 23 goals in 98 games before he retired as a player in 2004.
Poyet represented the Uruguay national team, earned 23 caps and scored 3 goals. In 1995 he was a part of the team winning Copa América.
In the summer of 2006, he became an assistant manager at Swindon Town, combining this work with playing at the same time. In October 2006, he moved to Leeds United where he worked for a year as an assistant manager and twice appeared on the field as a player. In October 2007, Poyet became the coach at Tottenham Hotspur.
On 10 November 2009, the Uruguayan manager was appointed the head coach of Brighton & Hove Albion. In 2010/11 he led the team to Football League One title. Poyet was released from the club at the end of 2012/2013 season.
In October 2013 Poyet was named the new Sunderland coach replacing Paolo Di Canio.
