He was born in 1948 and played for German clubs Schalke 04, Eintracht Gelsenkirchen, SSV Hagen, 1. FC Mülheim and 1. FC Bocholt and finished his playing career in Canadian Vancouver Whitecaps.
Having finished his playing career Holger Osieck became an assistant coach of West Germany team for one season, when in 1990 they won the FIFA World Cup.
Then he coached German VfL Bochum, Turkish Fenerbahçe S.K. and Kocaelispor, Japanese Urawa Red Diamonds.
In 1999 he was appointed the head coach of the Canadian national team and worked there till 2003. Osieck led the team to the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup. From 2004 to 2006 he worked in FIFA technical department.
The next team he headed for the 2007/08 season was Urawa Red Diamonds, which he had coached earlier.
From August 2010 to October 2013 he was the head coach of the Australia national team. Osieck brought them to the final of the 2011 AFC Asian Cup and later on made it to the World Cup 2014 in Brazil. However, after failing to impress in friendly matches against Brazil and France, Osieck was sacked in the autumn 2013.
