João Saldanha was a journalist and football coach who was born on 3 July 1917. He played football for the football club Botafogo and was nicknamed by the fans João Sem Medo. After finishing his playing career Saldanha turned to journalism and became of the leading sport writers in the country. In 1957 he was appointed as Botafogo head coach and led the team to the Rio state championship trophy.
In 1969, he was invited to take charge of the national team. He held the post for one year.
