A football coach and former Germany national team player, Josef Heynckes was born on May 9, 1945 in Monchengladbach, Germany.
Jupp began his football career at Borussia Monchengladbach, in his native city. He spent almost his entire career at this club with the exception of 3 years when he played for Hannover 96 (1967-1970). When with Monchengladbach, Heynckes won Bundesliga four times (1971, 1975, 1976, 1977), the German Cup (1973) and the UEFA Cup (1975). He became the 3rd top scorer in the UEFA tournaments and Bundesliga. Together with the Germany national team Jupp became European champion (1972) and World champion two years later.
After finishing his playing career, Heynckes did not leave his native club and became a coach to work there in 1979-1987. Afterwards, Jupp was in charge of Bayern Munich and coached them to the national championship title in 1989 and 1990. After 2 years in Spain (coached Athletic Bilbao), Heynckes returned to Germany. After a season as Eintracht coach, Jupp went back to the Spaniards. He coached a season in Tenerife (1996-1997) and Real Madrid (1997-1998). Afterwards he was with the Portuguese Benfica for a year and once again came back to Athletic Bilbao. In 2003, the coach returned to Germany to be in charge of Schalke 04. After an unsuccessful season Jupp was fired. After a two-year coaching break Heynckes was to face bad luck again: the native Borussia Monchengladbach fired him right in the middle of the season. He was Bayern Munich interim head coach half of the season in 2009. By the start of the new season Jupp has become Bayer Leverkusen head coach. Since 2011 Heynckes has been Bayern Munich head coach.
After winning the Bundesliga championship, the DFB Pokal Cup and the Champions League in 2012/2013 Jupp Heynckes resigned from Bayern Munich.
