Lucien Favre was born on November 2, 1957 in Saint-Barthélemy, Switzerland.
He played 299 matches as a midfielder in different clubs n 1976-1991. The footballer played for Swiss clubs such as Lausanne-Sports (1976-1979), Neuchâtel Xamax FC (1979-1981), Servette FC (1981-1983, 1984-1991), and spent a season in the French Toulouse FC (1983-1984). He made 24 appearances for the Switzerland national team in 1981-1989. In 1991, Lucien finished his playing career and in 2 years he began to work as head coach.
Lucien Favre coached Swiss clubs for almost 15 years: FC Echallens (1993-1995), Yverdon-Sport FC (1997-2000), Servette FC (200-2002) and FC Zurich (2003-2007). After working with leaders of the Swiss national championship, Favre began his international coaching career. In 2007, Lucien was appointed head coach of the German Hertha BSC. In the 2008/2009 season the team finished 4th in Bundesliga and got the right to play in the UEFA tournaments. At that time Favre left his position. On February 14, 2011, Lucien Favre was appointed head coach of Borussia Monchengladbach to replace Michael Frontzeck who had resigned.
