Marco van Basten is former Dutch football player and a famous manager. He has been named one of the best strikers of all time and one of the symbols of Dutch football. Van Basten received the European Footballer of the Year award in 1988, 1989 and 1992 and FIFA World Player of the Year prize in 1992.
Van Basten was born on 31 October 1964 in Utrecht and started his career in a local team, EDO. After playing for such club, as UVV Utrecht and Elinkwijk, the Dutchman was signed by Ajax, where he became a top forward of the Eredivisie for four seasons (from 1983/84 to 1986/87), overall finding the target 117 goals in 112 matches.
In 1987 Van Basten joined Milan and in the Italian team van Basten played for 8 seasons, winning several Scudettos, the European Cup and the Ballon d’Or.In 1995 van Basten retired from football, claiming he would never try coaching career. Yet in 2003 he accepted the offer to become Ajax second team manager.
On 29 July 2004 Basten was chosen the manager of the national team of Netherlands.Under his helm, the side finished atop of the qualification group for the World Cup, but during the World Cup 2006 they were defeated 0-1 by Portugal.
In 2008 Van Basten was appointed as Ajax manager; however he was sacked when the team did qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
On 13 February 2012 Marco Van Basten took the spot of Heerenveen manager.
