Matías Almeyda is an Argentine football manager, currently responsible for Club Atlético River Plate. He was born in 1973 in Azul, Argentina.
Almeyda began his senior playing career at River Plate where he played from 1991 to 1996 and after that he moved to Spain signing with Sevilla FC for a fee of $9 million. He spent one season with the club and as they suffered relegation he moved to S.S. Lazio in Italy. Almeyda stayed there for three years and then joined A.C. Parma in 2000, where he played till 2002 and, been replaced by Vratislav Greško, he left the club for Inter Milan. In 2004, he moved to Brescia Calcio but after relegation to the lower division he returned to Argentina and joined Quilmes Atlético Club for a short spell. Soon he retired from football, stayed aside for half a year and then went to Norway to join FK Lyn, playing mostly with reserves. After his stint there Almeyda retired though in 2009 he played for Club Atlético Fénix in Argentina and from 2009 to 2011 he stayed with River Plate and finally retired at ate age of 37. Very soon after his retirement he took over as the manager of River Plate.
Almeyda represented the Argentina national team and all in all earned 35 caps including the 1996 Summer Olympics, when they won silver.
